Thomas Deacon Education Trust

A pupil at Thomas Deacon Academy Juniors (TDAJ) has won first prize in a competition to design a logo commemorating Thomas Deacon’s legacy to education in Peterborough.

The competition was run by the Thomas Deacon Foundation charity across the seven Thomas Deacon Education Trust (TDET) academies, with all pupils invited to enter.

Their brief was to design a unique logo which will be used to promote a series of events this year to mark the 300th anniversary of Thomas Deacon’s legacy.

The competition was won by Kasparas, in Year 6, who was presented with his prize of a £50 voucher and certificate by John Turner, Vice Chair of Thomas Deacon Foundation, Rick Carroll, Executive Principal of Thomas Deacon Academy, and Alex Powell-Bowns, Subject Leader for Art. Vouchers and certificates were also awarded to two Year 9 TDA students, Tulip and Ayaan, who were runners up in the competition, and will be awarded to Year 3 pupil, Arlo, from Upwood Primary Academy, who came third.

John Turner said: “Kasparas’s eye-catching logo, featuring two children’s hands holding a heart wrapped in ribbons, stood out to us all with its creative and engaging design that perfectly captures the kindness of Thomas Deacon. His logo will be used to promote lots of exciting events this year to commemorate and continue Thomas Deacon’s legacy to education in Peterborough.”

Thomas Deacon, a local dignitary in the 1700s, bequeathed his cottages and land to be set up as a school for ‘twenty poor boys’, as well as funds towards apprenticeships when the pupils left school. The school began as Deacon’s Charity School in 1722 and is now Thomas Deacon Academy, one of TDET’s seven academies which cater for more than 5,000 children and young people across Peterborough and surrounding areas. Thomas Deacon Foundation works closely alongside TDET to continue Thomas Deacon’s legacy into the future.

Rick Carroll, Executive Principal of Thomas Deacon Academy, said: “We have a series of celebratory events lined up this year to mark the 300th anniversary of Thomas Deacon’s original act of kindness. Our new logo - with Kasparas’s amazing winning design - will be used within our academies as we raise awareness of the history of Thomas Deacon and launch our own ‘Acts of Kindness’.

“We will also use the logo in our work to engage with people across the wider community. Thomas Deacon left our local area a fantastic legacy which is going from strength to strength 300 years later. We are aiming to continue taking this forward in an innovative, future-focused way that improves the lives of our young people, furthering their education, well-being and skills, and delivering exceptional benefit to our local communities.”
