Queen Katharine Academy, part of Thomas Deacon Education Trust (TDET), has been shortlisted for an impressive five awards this academic year, including three TES awards and two Pearson National Teaching Awards (NTAs).
The academy has been shortlisted for coveted TES awards in the categories of; Subject Leader of the Year for Josè Ros, Head of Spanish, TA of the Year for In Wha Kim, who heads up the academy’s popular Korean Club, and Community Engagement Initiative of the Year for its innovative Community Hub.
As well as these, staff at QKA are also celebrating being shortlisted for two NTA awards, known as the Oscars of the teaching profession, in the categories of Secondary Teacher of the Year for Josè Ros, and Outstanding New Teacher of the Year for English teacher, Julie Howard.
Head of School, Miss Jane Driver, said: “For Queen Katharine Academy to be shortlisted for five awards in a single academic year is a truly outstanding achievement. I am so proud of all the individuals and teams involved and the incredible work they do every day, which transforms the lives of our students.
“Josè Ros and his Modern Foreign Languages (MFL) team are pioneers in developing our MFL curriculum to meet the diverse needs of our student population and he thoroughly deserves his place on both the TES and NTA award shortlists. We are also excited to receive recognition for our Community Hub, a unique feature of QKA which is a lifeline for students, families and the surrounding community to access linguistic and social support, mentoring and guidance, and a food bank each week.
“New ECT, Julie Howard is truly inspirational, teaching with warmth and passion as well as setting up a Bilingual Excellence Scheme for migrant EAL students, and our Teaching Assistant, In Wha Kim has independently created, funded and delivered our incredibly popular Korean Club as well as organising cultural trips and being an outstanding full-time TA.

The NTA shortlisted individuals and teams will be celebrated, and award winners announced, on Wednesday 21st June at a special event in London. The TES winners will be announced at a gala evening, also in London, on Friday 23rd June.
