Staff and pupils at Richard Barnes Academy have generously packed and delivered 12 donation boxes to local charity, Light Project Peterborough.
The boxes, which contained essential items such as hats, gloves, deodorant, and food, were donated and put together by pupils from the GEMS group at the Academy’s Fitzwilliam site.
Light Project Peterborough has worked within the city for a number of years and runs the Garden House which provides a drop-in centre for homeless people to receive free support and advice.
Nick Morley, Principal of Richard Barnes Academy, said: “We are absolutely delighted to be supporting the Light Project Peterborough as our chosen charity of the year. Our learners were very excited to support the project and provide help to those who are homeless. I was so proud to deliver the boxes which represent our pupils hard work and generosity, as well as symbolise hope for those who need them most.”
Steven Pettican, CEO of Light Project Peterborough, said: “Every day we see people coming through the doors of the Garden House in real need. The Peterborough community has been amazing in its support for our work, but when young people help it is a real credit to them and their families.

As part of its charity of the year partnership, the academy is looking forward to further fundraising and campaigning for Light Project Peterborough throughout the year.
Richard Barnes Academy, which is part of the Thomas Deacon Education Trust, provides specialist primary and secondary education for pupils in the city, aged between 4-16, who have been permanently excluded from school, or who are at risk of permanent exclusion. The academy aims to successfully integrate as many of these pupils as possible back into mainstream education.
The academy is the seventh to join the Thomas Deacon Education Trust that helps unite and empower like-minded schools to achieve the very best for its pupils. At the heart of the Trust’s vision is a profound belief that difference is a strength to be valued and celebrated.
