Thomas Deacon's historic legacy

Honouring Thomas Deacon’s historic legacy

The first Thomas Deacon’s school opened in 1722, and we are proud to have been transforming the lives of young people across the city through education for more than 300 years. TDET is now a partnership of seven academies, educating over 5,000 children and young people in Peterborough and surrounding areas.

In 2022, we celebrated our Trust's 300-year anniversary, working with the charity Thomas Deacon Foundation to mark this historic milestone with a series of special events. These included a special commemorative service at Peterborough Cathedral, a Trust-wide logo competition and the launch of our annual Act of Kindness Awards.

This prestigious awards ceremony celebrates Thomas Deacon's original act of kindness in leaving a legacy in his will to fund the first Deacon's Charity School, which opened in 2022, with students and staff undertaking kind and charitable deeds throughout the year in his memory.
